We started as a culture-led, community-built, and city-backed movement to bring professional soccer to Portland and the state of Maine. Our goal was simple: to create an elite club that reflects the character of Maine and drives economic, community, and cultural value to the city and state.

As Maine’s only professional club, we represent a people, place, and purpose. This club is a reflection of the diverse communities and cultures of Maine, from the Highlands to Downeast, Casco Bay to Acadia, Aroostook to the Forest City.

Our Mission: Rally the community and culture of Maine around soccer.

Our Vision: Create a purpose-driven club that represents and benefits all who have their hearts in Maine.

Firebird Trail Races – Runaways Run Club

About

Firebird Trail Race is a challenging and wicked fun trail race with distance options of 13M, 50K & 50M, that runs on donations, positive vibes, and a crushingly technical course in Falmouth, Maine. This annual event is hosted by Runaways Run Club.

Our goal is to celebrate our amazing trail running community and accomplish great feats together, cheering each other to the finish, for the first time or the millionth time. Unlike other races, to compete here you must donate to a non-profit of your choice in addition to paying the low cost registration fee. Instead of some mega race conglomerate taking the profits, we ask that you pay it forward and contribute to a non-profit that aligns with your values. The donation must be made between August 25, 2024 and August 22, 2025, and we must have proof of the donation (a receipt, confirmation letter from the recipient, image of your check) by August 22, 2025 in order to confirm entry. Donations must be at least $20. Participants have donated over $30,000, which is nothing short of astounding!

Start Times

– 50K – 6:30 AM
– Marathon – 8:00 AM
– 13M – 9:30 AM

Aid Stations

There will be two aid stations – one at the start/finish and one at the 5 mile turnaround point. There will be water, soda, chips, candy, and LMNT salt/electrolyte drink mix available at both stations. There will be volunteer personnel to assist runners at both aid stations throughout the event. Drop bags can be left at either (or both) location, please bring your preferred nutrition and electrolytes.

The Course

The 10 mile loop in Lowell Preserve and thru North Falmouth Community Forest is technical and challenging, with lots of rocks and roots on mostly single-track trails. All events start and finish in Lowell Preserve at the Windham Fire Station.

– 13M course: one 10 mile loop in Lowell Preserve and North Falmouth Community Forest plus an additional 5k loop in the new East Windham Conservation Area trails
– 50K course: three 10 mile loops in Lowell Preserve and North Falmouth Community Forest plus an additional 5k loop in Lowell (this one gives you a little extra for your registration fee)
– Marathon course: twice around the 13M course.

Refunds / Cancellations / Dropping

This is a grassroots event benefiting the local trail systems. Accordingly, event management will not issue any refunds associated with this event, under any circumstances. Any residual profits will be donated to a local land trust of the event organizers choosing.

Runners in the 50M or 50K may drop down to a lower distance through the day of the race. Please notify a race director or start line volunteer prior to the start of the race if you plan to drop down, and 50M and 50K runners who decide mid-race to drop down to a lower distance will not be eligible to win the lower distance event. 50M runners who decide mid-race to drop down to the 50K will be given the option of a 50K finish if they complete four 10 mile laps. 50K runners must make the decision to drop to the 13M prior to the start of the their race and must start with the 13 mile runners in order to receive a 13M finish time. Anything else constitutes a result of DNF. Those dropping down to the lower distance will not receive a refund.

Organizers will offer a pregnancy deferral for this event to be used in a subsequent year following pregnancy and postpartum recovery. Please feel free to reach out with any questions at Runaways Run Club.

Back Cove Backyard Ultra

BACK COVE BACKYARD ULTRA

Portland’s only backyard ultra on the iconic Back Cove Trail is back for year 4! Test yourself over and over (and over) again, or until the last biped remains standing. Every hour on the hour you’ll head out to complete the 4.16 mile loop, in a test of physical and mental fortitude. Think you have what it takes? Let’s find out!
The start/finish area is centrally located at Back Cove Park across from a Hannaford Supermarket and other amenities. There will be porta potties and an aid station at the start/finish area with water, packaged snacks, electrolyte/salt packets, basic first aid supplies and ice available during the heat of the day. You should plan to bring everything else you think you’ll need in addition to these basics. There are water fountains at intervals on the Back Cove trail, and public toilets in Payson Park (approximately halfway through the loop). There will be an unmanned aid station in Payson Park with water and minimal supplies.

Course

The Back Cove Trail is a 3.5 mile non-technical, mostly flat, gravel loop, with a short paved bridge crossing. The trail takes runners along the edge of a tidal estuary basin, and offers a beautiful view the entire length of the route. There is a 0.60 mile add-on each loop on the Bayside Trail when you get to the start/finish area, to equal the standard 4.16 mile backyard ultra distance. Parking is free in the public lot adjacent to the start/finish on a first come/first served basis.

Aid Station

There will be two aid stations. There will be one unstaffed aid station in Payson Park with water, basic first aid supplies, and packaged snacks. There will be a fully staffed aid station at the start/finish where there will be water, electrolytes, packaged and prepared snacks and basic first aid supplies. Event personnel will be on hand at the start/finish for the duration of the event, so participants are welcome to leave their drop bags/supplies at that location. There is space for participants to place a small tent or canopy adjacent to the start/finish area. There are porta potties in Payson Park and at the start/finish area.

Pricing & Refunds

This is a hyper-local event. We’ve deliberately kept the price for this event relatively low, are relying on volunteer support, and offering practical and minimal swag to keep our expenses low. We will not issue refunds for any reason, other than extraordinary circumstances determined at the event organizers discretion. Organizers will offer a pregnancy deferral for this event to be used in a subsequent year following pregnancy and post-partum recovery.

More about the Cole Classic – Casco Bay Islands

A husband, a father, a sportsman, an event organizer, and a leader, Jeff Cole cared deeply about each and every person he had contact with. He grew up on the water and worked as a lifeguard and was a volunteer fireman at the Kennebunk Fire Dept for over 20 years, founded and produced multisport races – from the Fireman’s Tri in Kennebunkport to White Mountains Tri in Franconia, New Hampshire. He served on the Board of Directors for numerous businesses, schools, and sporting organizations and yet spent a few weeks each year living off the grid completely self-sufficient. Jeff was an independent thinker but also a consensus builder. He never asked anyone to do something he was not prepared to do himself. He is fiercely missed but his legacy lives on through his wife Kim, daughter Rachel, son Ben, his friends, and through the SwimRun USA events he pioneered.

Big Brad Ultra – Trail Monster Series

Here are two great reviews of the Pounder and Punisher on the Trail Collective Weekly Rundown.  If you only want to see a review of our races, skip to about 18 minutes in. Please visit the Trail Monsters site for all the details!

Maine’s got some BIG BAD ULTRAMARATHONS: races with single-track trails, big hills, and gnarly terrain. Trail Monster Running is proud to present the eleventh annual Big Brad Ultras on October 26, 2025 on the trails of Bradbury Mountain State Park and the surrounding area.  And this year, we’ve added relays!!!

Get ready for a beautiful challenge. Runners tackle a 16.2 mile loop that’s a gauntlet of great Maine singletrack, journeying through Bradbury Mountain State Park, over Tryon Mountain, Chandler Brook, and back into Bradbury Mountain State Park. The course has tough hills, rocks, roots, and very little flat including a 1/2 mile of paved road and 1/4 mile of dirt road. With the fall foliage at it’s peak, there are sure to be many fantastic vistas along the route.

Not ready to run an ultra yet? Gather one or two friends and try the new to 2022 RELAY! or Have someone running? Come find out what it’s all about, while helping! We will have the volunteer sign up out in mid-September.

BIG BRAD ULTRAS IS A CUPLESS “ISH” EVENT.  PLEASE BRING REUSEABLE CUP FOR ALL YOUR HYDRATION NEEDS.

All finishers receive a finisher’s hoodie.  Winner’s of the 50 mile and 50k solo races earn a coveted Adirondack chair from Prospect Mountain Furniture.
