Sideline Stories: Sarah Stanley, Executive Director, Kennebunk Land Trust

I am a proud 11th generation Mainer! Maine is such a special place and it’s easy to see why it’s known as “Vacationland.” Forests, fields, mountains, and coastline—there are endless opportunities for adventure and exploration. These places are where my lasting memories were made.

Outdoor recreation was a cornerstone of my childhood. Spring fishing trips to First Roach and Sebago Lake and frequent visits to Mousam Way Land Trust’s Deering Pond rail trail strengthened my connection with the outdoors and complemented my love of team sports like field hockey.

The importance of leaving the world better than you found it was a lesson I learned early in life and it represents one of my core values. Planting milkweed in our family’s backyard, a crucial food source for monarch caterpillars, or using rain barrels to irrigate the garden are examples of the many ways my parents demonstrated how to be good environmental stewards. Many of my fondest times are connected to the outdoors. Working with my father to build handcrafted ice fishing traps in our garage and the pride I felt the first time the trap’s flag popped up (fish on!) will never be forgotten. Moments like that shaped my desire to pursue a career in conservation and outdoor recreation.

At Bates College, I focused on Environmental Studies & Politics; my thesis examined human rights and corporate social responsibility in the oil sector; this research caused me to further reflect upon the many interconnections of our world. At Bates, coursework such as Field Geology of Maine and Limnology of New England Lakes enhanced my field work skills. Later, I pursued an M.S. in Environmental Studies & Sustainability through Unity College and partnered with the City of Sanford to create an appendix for the City’s Comprehensive Plan; the appendix focused on approaches to establishing a municipal tree program within the community. I’m thankful for my mentors and supporters, especially the strong women who encouraged me along the way.

Today, I work as the Executive Director for the Kennebunk Land Trust (KLT), and there, serve to develop new partnerships with peer organizations and businesses, enhance community conservation, and create new outreach programs and fundraisers for a growing membership. I’m a Registered Maine Guide, am CPR and Wilderness First Aid Certified, and hold a private pilot’s license with a sea plane rating. I’m also a proud member of the Maine Audubon Board of Trustees. When not working, you might find me kayaking at Mousam Lake or hiking a local trail!
